This will enable it to “rapidly respond to customers” varied latency and computing needs.Verizon explained virtualisation efforts around the core and RAN involved decoupling software and hardware functionality, enabling the network to be built on general purpose hardware.Similar to many of its industry peers pushing an open RAN network approach, the company also highlighted the benefits of virtualised infrastructure, noting it enables greater flexibility in the introduction of new products and services, and “lowers the barrier to entry for new vendors in the ecosystem”.Adam Koeppe, SVP of technology and planning, said virtualising its entire network from the core to the edge had been a “massive multi-year redesign effort”, which simplifies and modernises its entire infrastructure.“Verizon has been on the leading edge of virtualising the core over the past few years and has been bullish in the design and development of open RAN technology, as well as in the testing of that technology with great success.”Koeppe added virtualised networks will enable the company and the industry to deliver other key 5G use cases, including massive scale IoT services, more robust consumer devices, AR/VR, remote healthcare and autonomous robotics in manufacturing environments. first_imgSOUTH AFRICA: The Dunnottar industrial park where the Alstom-led Gibela joint venture will manufacture new EMUs for Prasa was officially inaugurated by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Transport Minister Blade Nzimande on October 25. The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga and the Premier of Gauteng Province David Makhura, as well as Gibela CEO Thierry Darthout and Alstom’s Senior Vice-President for Middle East & Africa, Didier Pfleger.Located near Nigel, in the Ekurhuleni district of Gauteng 50 km east of Johannesburg, the 72 ha Dunnottar Park has been developed over the past 22 months at a cost of R1bn. The Gibela assembly plant is expected to employ 1 500 people when fully operational, and will have more than 700 employees by 2020. The industrial park will also accommodate a training school and a 1·2 km test track, as well as providing facilities to house local component suppliers. The Gibela joint venture of Alstom (61%) Ubumbano Rail (30%) and New Africa Rail (9%) is due to deliver 600 six-car X’Ttrapolis Mega EMUs to Prasa over 10 years under a R51bn contract signed in late 2013. The 1 067 mm gauge EMUs will be used on Metrorail commuter services in Gauteng, Cape Town and Durban. The first 20 pre-series EMUs have been produced at Alstom’s Lapa works in Brazil, but the remaining 580 are to be assembled locally. The first Brazilian-built trainset was delivered to South Africa in December 2015, and the last was completed in July 2017. The first two locally-built EMUs are expected to roll out of the Dunnottar Park works by the end of this year, with a further nine following by March 2019 and 56 by the end of 2020. When fully operational, the plant will be able to turn out up to 62 trains per year. With the contract including a commitment to sourcing local components accounting for at least 65% of the contract value, Gibela has already contracted 71 South African suppliers to provide materials, parts and services. Alstom says the joint venture’s activities are now supporting more than 4 700 jobs. According to the South African Department of Transport the investment will create a wide range of jobs and contribute to skills development, promoting black economic empowerment and support communities. The new works will also be able to produce replacement parts for those lost due to vandalism.‘This factory is a major boost to the rail industry in the country, as South Africa will now be able to produce state-of-the-art trains locally’ said Pfleger. ‘It will become the Alstom centre of excellence for railway technology in Africa, with a positive impact for the country’s economy as a whole.’last_img read more

Mayor Pat Porter said she doesn’t intend to hear financial offers tonight, she was hoping to stick to the broader reasons why business owners feel they should be able to buy airport land.center_img Bannock: “The City Administration is recommending a no sale of a piece of property that the firm that I work for is leasing and wants to buy. The philosophy checks needs to be, ‘how does the City of Kenai address long-term lease holders that want to buy their property?’ Particularly property that is within the airport land system.” The work session will begin with 30 minutes discussing junk vehicle regulations and start addressing the airport lands proposal at 6pm. The meeting will hear comment from anyone with an opinion or an interest in purchasing airport land.last_img read more

Eliot met with the media Wednesday to look ahead to his team’s game against Vanderbilt. You can read a full transcript of his comments below:Opening statement: “It was a good practice. Excited to be out there. Full-padded practice again on a Wednesday, like it is every Wednesday. We had some competitive periods with the offense. It’s always good to compete. We’re emphasizing us and getting better each day, each practice and each play. The players have a good attitude and are working hard. We’re excited to finish out this week and play on Saturday.”On if practices are more physical now than last year: “No, we’ve had physical practices this year. Today was one of them. We’re going to continue to do that at Coach Stoops’ direction throughout the season and throughout the week.”On what the team gets out of physical practices: “Yeah, keep them on their edge. Keep playing fast. You go against each other and then you go against fastballs and more physical blockers, more physical defensive linemen, more physical run plays. To keep them on edge and keep those techniques sharp.”Practice Report: UK keeping practice physicalOn the pass rush being better against Georgia: “I think C.J. Johnson had some good pass rush. He got to the quarterback a lot. Some of our blitzes hit home and forced some quick throws. We had a lot of that early in the season, where we were getting to the quarterback and not getting him to the ground but were forcing quick throws and making plays off of that. I think with C.J. on there full-time now we’ve improved on that. That’s one of his best attributes. I think we’ll continue to see him do that throughout the season and some other guys step up as well.”On younger players who the defense is looking at as far as pass rush: “Denzil Ware is a freshman. We’ve put him in some situations where he’s on the edge. Some of our blitzes have different guys coming and different guys dropping. Different guys are isolated at different times. We’ve had more inside linebackers involved rushing the quarterback than we have in the past. It’s something we’re working on every week.”On how he thinks the outside linebackers have done replacing Bud Dupree and Za’Darius Smith: “You weren’t gonna fill Bud’s and you weren’t gonna fill Z’s shoes. You just weren’t. Those guys were seniors. Those guys were very talented players that had played a lot of reps. We didn’t expect somebody to step up and fill their shoes. Those are special players that had a lot of experience for us and played a lot of plays. But I think some other players have stepped up. Like I mentioned, I think Cory Johnson has really turned around and had a good year for him inside and rushing the passer. We’ve seen some pressure from some inside linebackers that we haven’t necessarily seen in the past, with Josh and Ryan and some of those other guys.”Q&A: Stoops wants UK to enjoy football againOn Khalid Henderson regaining a starting role: “Khalid is a very competitive player. He’s a very competitive person in general, and that’s what we love about him. Ryan has his skill set that is different than Khalid’s, but Khalid just goes out there and competes every day and gets better and just makes plays and knows where he’s supposed to be. Week to week, we plan on playing both those guys, but they’re competing at a very high level every day in practice.”On if it’s helpful to have so many seniors on defense as they try to regain confidence: “It always helps to have seniors. Guys that have been there, guys that haven’t been there. I think our senior leadership has been very good down this tough stretch, and I anticipate that they’ll lead our team very well towards the end.”On what having Jason Hatcher back at 100 percent would give them: “I think to have him back would give us some more depth and give us some more speed at that outside linebacker/defensive end spot. I think he’s close. He’s had a good week of practice and we’re anticipating him to play on Saturday.”On what he has seen from Vanderbilt’s run game on film: “They have a very good scheme. They have a lot of different personnel groups and they have a lot of different ways to attack you. And their players execute their scheme very well. You’ve got to be sound, we’ve got to be physical, and ultimately you have to tackle well, too. They have good tailbacks, as well. They’ve got quarterback runs, too, that can always give defenses fits, so I’ve been impressed with their run game.”On if he’ll be back in the box on Saturday: “I will.”On if that’s what he’ll do for the rest of the year: “I think so. I think so. Yes. I think so.”On if there are ways the coaching staff is trying to get the team to play more freely: “That’s not my personality. (Laughs) But, yes. We’re definitely concentrating on us and concentrating on getting better, but also while you’re at a practice having fun. You always play best when you play confident and you play to win, but you enjoy being out there and getting better, too.”Drops continue to plague UK receiversOn young guys getting tight when things start to go badly: “Well I hope that’s not the case. I definitely have seen young guys make mistakes. We’ve made the corrections with those guys, but we’ve done everything we can to keep them confident and keep them aggressive and keep them becoming playmakers.”On what Chris Westry’s gotten out of this season: “I think he has a lot of experience. I think he has a lot of confidence — now granted, I think he came in with a lot of confidence — but he’s even developed more because he’s had so much success. We’ve put him in some tough situations and he’s won a lot of one on ones. He’s a guy I’ve been very pleased with his play, not only early but down the stretch as well.”On any hard lessons Westry’s learned: “I think just like every other freshman, it’s a grind. I think he’s learned that you’ve got to come to work every day and push through nagging injuries and stay mentally focused for a long time and you’ve got to just, gotta finish. I think most high school seasons are pretty much over by now and we started long before they did and our season goes much longer than theirs is. So I think it’s just the freshman grind as they say.”Sign up to get more like this free in your inboxlast_img read more
