first_imgMan City defence will blow title – Neville, Carragherby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveThe centre-back pairing of Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones will cost Manchester City the Premier League title, according to Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher. With Vincent Kompany gone and Aymeric Laporte out for six months, Pep Guardiola was forced to play Otamendi and Stones together against Norwich City on Saturday. The match ended in a 3-2 loss for City, who are now five points behind league leaders Liverpool.”He (Otamendi) dives in, he has done it all his career,” Carragher told Sky Sports Monday Night Football”He will never change and that’s why he’s not good enough to play for Manchester City. I have never believed it from day one and nothing I have seen in the last four or five years has changed my mind.”John Stones, in some ways, over the next three or four months, is almost fighting for his Manchester City career in that, if it doesn’t go well for him they are going to buy someone.”At this moment, I don’t think Guardiola wants to put those two on the pitch together but he has got no option because he has not gone big in the summer.”Neville added that Guardiola’s inability to bring a replacement in until at least January could cost City over the whole season.”Guardiola gave up on this partnership 18 months ago when Laporte came to the club,” Neville said.”Otamendi always gets caught out as a centre-back and quickens up the opposition in attack. He’s so not a Pep Guardiola type centre-back, they’re usually composed but he’s rash.”Sir Alex Ferguson at times during his Manchester United career would see a game too far with players and say, ‘That’s it, you’re done’. Manchester City’s 4-3 defeat at Liverpool in 2018 was the game when Guardiola decided that Stones and Otamendi couldn’t play together.”Laporte’s injury, Kompany leaving and not replacing him is a big problem for Manchester City. Stones and Otamendi have played 25 games under Guardiola in the Premier League.”They’ve conceded more goals than any other partnership, conceded more goals per game, the clean sheets are down, the three-plus goals conceded is well up and then there’s the big one, lower win percentage.”That will cost Manchester City the Premier League title. If these two play together at their current rate of performance they won’t win the league.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

first_imgLiverpool boss Klopp admits he missed Origi winner against Barcelonaby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveJurgen Klopp admits he missed Divock Origi’s winner in the Champions League semi-final win over Barcelona.Origi scored from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quick corner to make it 4-0 and secure the Reds’ place in the final.”Unfortunately, the most incredible moment in the history of the Champions League… I didn’t actually see it,” Klopp said. “Maybe this is a good metaphor for the life of a football manager, I don’t know. But I completely missed Trent Alexander-Arnold’s moment of pure genius.”I saw the ball go out for a corner. I saw Trent walking over to take it. I saw Shaqiri following him. But then I turned my back because we were preparing to make a substitution. I was talking to my assistant, and… you know, I have goose bumps every time I think about it… I just heard the noise.”I turned to the pitch and I saw the ball flying into the goal. I turned back to our bench and looked at Ben Woodburn, and he said, “What just happened?!” And I said, “I have no idea!”‘ “Anfield was going — boof — absolutely crazy. I could barely hear my assistant, and he was yelling, “So… do we still make the substitute?” Hahahaha! I will never forget him saying that! That will always be with me.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

first_imgMan City chief Berrada aims sly dig at Liverpool: Best team doesn’t win UCLby Freddie Taylor14 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester City chief Omar Berrada has taken a dig at Liverpool for their recent UEFA Champions League success. The Reds were crowned champions of Europe after defeating Tottenham in the final last season. But they were unable to finish above City in the Premier League table, despite amassing 90 points. When asked if City are getting closer to winning their first major European trophy, Berrada told reporters: “A lot, of course, but what we don’t want to do is obsess. It is something we believe will come.”Of course it would give us one more point at the brand level, but it is a very random competition. Especially in the elimination phase.”I would say that not always the best team wins the Champions League, but usually the best team wins the league.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Obviously, if we can increase it to 48 teams and make the world happy we should try it,” Infantino told the Dubai International Sports Conference on Wednesday.”If you think it’s a good thing to have 48 teams in the World Cup, why not try four years before, that’s why we are analysing whether it’s possible to have 48 teams already in 2022″If we can accommodate some of the neighbouring countries in the gulf region which are very close by to host a few games in the World Cup this could be very beneficial for the region and the entire world.”There are tensions in this particular region and it’s up to their respective leaders to deal with that but maybe it’s easier to talk about a joint football project than more complicated things.”If it can help all the people in the Gulf and all the countries in the world develop football and bring a positive message to the world about football, then you should give it a try.”last_img read more

first_imgAuburn lost to Georgia.Twitter/@929TheGameAuburn fell to Georgia on Saturday erasing all hopes for a spot in the College Football Playoff.Auburn was a long-shot to get into the College Football Playoff, but if the Tigers could run the table, knock off Alabama in the Iron Bowl and win the SEC Championship it could’ve happened. That scenario is no longer possible, as the Tigers fell to Georgia 13-7 on Saturday. Auburn is now 7-3 on the year and 5-2 in the SEC. With the loss, likely the only SEC team with a chance to make the Playoff is Alabama. Alabama clinched the SEC West with the Auburn loss.Auburn’s offense was nearly non existent against the Bulldogs as the Tigers had just 164 yards on the day. Sean White went just 6-for-20 through the air for 27 yards and an interception. It’s tough to win a football game against anyone, let alone Georgia, with just 37 total passing yards as the Tigers had on Saturday.White also threw a pick six in the third quarter which tied the game at seven a piece. Rodrigo Blankenship then added two field goals from then on out to give the Bulldogs their 13-7 edge.Sanford Stadium faithful cheering on the #Dawgs after an upset win over No. 8 Auburn. #AUBvsUGA— 92.9 The Game (@929TheGame) November 13, 2016Georgia, on the other hand, found success on offense, putting up 343 yards on the Tigers’ defense including 208 yards through the air.The Tigers, who were among the best running teams in the nation entering the contest, had just 127 yards on the ground with Kerryon Johnson leading the charge with 99 yards. He scored 20 goals in 2018-19, finishing the second top scorer in the Portuguese top-flight behind Haris Seferovic’s 23, and added 13 assists to come in second in the assist chart, too, behind Benfica’s Pizzi. He also added another three goals and an assist for Sporting during their Europa League campaign. And while Mourinho did not doubt the quality in Fernandes’ game, he was surprised by the prowess in the box, given his position.”I was surprised by the season of Bruno Fernandes. It was easy to predict quality, he is a very good player, but scored a very high number of goals for a midfield player,” Mourinho told Eleven Sports.”It shows that you need to have instinct and qualities to score and he has it all. He strikes the ball well, heads well, cool when he is one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He finds space in the penalty area. It’s all there.”Fernandes brilliant campaign has seen him linked to a move back to a top five league, having featured in Serie A for Udinese and Sampdoria in the past.Goal has previously revealed in May that Manchester City were in pole position to land the Sporting star in a €50 million deal (£43m/$56m).However, while Fernandes talked up City in a recent interview, he heaped greater praise on Champions League finalist Liverpool, saying he enjoyed their more direct, intense football.Fernandes will be offered further chances to impress in the coming week as he has been named to Portugal’s 23-man squad ahead of their Nations League semi-final June 5 against Switzerland. He will be looking turn his club performance into a bigger role with the national team, as Fernandes had just late cameo in his sole Nations League outing for Portugal.last_img read more
